5 Reasons Why Your Lock Isn’t Working
A broken lock can be a big problem not only because it can get you locked outside but also because it is a serious security breach in your home security.
Latch Misalignment
This problem occur when the latch bolt on the door doesn’t line up with the strike plate on the door frame. The bolt might be a bit too high, too low or off to one side. To fix it you could try unscrewing and moving the strike plate and place it in a right position. If that doesn’t solve the problem it is required to adjust the position of the door itself.
Key Won’t Turn
Before getting into any wrong conclusion make sure that you’re using the right key. It is quite easy to mix up look a like keys. If you’re 100% sure you’re using the correct key but it still not turning inside your lock it probably might be because of dirt or debris. Apply condensed air sprays or silicon based sprays to fix this issue.
Another reason could be that the key is all worn out. Over time the edges of a key which also known as the key teeth can get too smooth to turn the lock. If you have a spare key try using it in order to be sure this is the problem and if it works you should replace the worn out key with a new copy. If the key is new and you have problems turning it inside the lock it might be was cut right or it might have some debris on its edges.
Lock Cylinder Issue
If the whole lock turns when you turn the key, the set screw is loose or broken. Remove the faceplate, tighten or replace the set screw, and reassemble the lock.
Stuck Deadbolt
There are 2 reasons for a deadbolt to get stuck, the first might be that the strike plate is out of alignment like in a latch misalignment issue we’ve discussed earlier. The second reason is because of that the internal mechanism is broken and it needs to be fixed or replaced.
Key Breaks Off Inside The Lock
The best option you have if your key breaks off in the lock is to call a locksmith to fix it for you. Don’t try to fix it your self because you might cause m ore damage.
A professional locksmith is well trained in these situations and they have the right tools to deal with it. They can grab the broken key with special needle nose pliers and gently extract it. In the worst case scenario they can disassemble the lock remove the broken piece and salvage the lock.
